How this age calculator works

The calculator takes two dates, your date of birth and the date you want your age calculated as of (this defaults to today, but you can change it to any date, past or future), and counts the calendar time between them. The main result shows a years, months and days breakdown: the number of full years since your birth date, then the number of full months since your last birthday, then the leftover days. Underneath that, the same span of time is shown as a running total in five other units, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds, so you get both the everyday answer and the exact number in one place.

The years/months/days breakdown counts full calendar months, not fixed 30-day blocks. That distinction matters more than it sounds: from January 15 to March 15 is exactly two months, but from January 31 to March 1 is not quite two months, because February does not have 31 days. This calculator follows the same everyday counting method used by most calendar-based age tools: it counts whole months up to the point where the day-of-month matches your birth date, then measures whatever is left over in real days. The calculator also shows the day of the week you were born on, and a countdown to your next birthday, since both come from the same date-of-birth field and cost nothing extra to work out once the main calculation is done.

Three worked examples

A few examples using the exact method this calculator runs, so you can sanity-check your own result before trusting it:

  1. Born January 1, 1985, calculated as of August 25, 2026: that is 41 years, 7 months and 24 days old, or 15,211 total days, 2,173 total weeks, and just over 365 million total seconds.
  2. Born June 15, 1990, calculated as of the same date: 36 years, 2 months and 10 days old, 13,220 total days, and 1,888 total weeks.
  3. Born on a leap day, February 29, 2000, calculated as of February 28, 2026, a non-leap year, so the 29th does not exist that year: 25 years, 11 months and 30 days, one day short of a round 26 years, because the last possible calendar day in a non-leap February is the 28th, not the 29th.

Why age calculations get confusing around month-end dates

Most of the time a years/months/days breakdown is obvious. It gets genuinely confusing right at the edges of short months. If you were born on January 31 and calculate your age as of March 1, you have not quite completed a full two months: February only has 28 or 29 days, so the calculator counts one full month, ending on the last day of February it can reach, and reports the single remaining day separately, rather than reporting a negative or nonsensical number. The same kind of edge case shows up around any month with fewer than 31 days, most often February, and it is a real property of the calendar, not a bug in the math. If a number here ever looks a day or two off from a quick mental estimate, this near-month-end effect is almost always why.

This is also the reason a person born on February 29 needs a specific rule for birthdays in ordinary, non-leap, years. This calculator treats February 28 as that person's birthday in a non-leap year, which is the convention most people expect, and the one used for the next-birthday countdown shown with your result. Someone born on February 29, 2000 will therefore see their birthday land on February 28 in 2026 (not a leap year), but back on February 29 itself in 2028, the next leap year.

Different ways age is counted around the world

The result above uses the most common age system: age increases by one on your birthday, and the age of someone who has lived 20 years and 11 months is 20, not 21, until the day it changes. Most countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and most of Europe, use this system without a specific name for it, because it is simply assumed to be the only one.

Some cultures count differently. In the traditional Korean age system, a baby is considered one year old at birth rather than zero, and everyone's age increases together at New Year rather than individually on each person's birthday, so a baby born in late December could be considered two years old within weeks under that convention. A related traditional Chinese system counts similarly: age starts at one, not zero, and increases at the Lunar New Year rather than on the birth date itself. These systems are largely cultural and ceremonial today rather than used for legal or administrative purposes, but they explain why an age question phrased differently can get a different-sounding answer depending on which system is assumed. This calculator always uses the Western/international system: age zero at birth, one full year added per completed trip around the sun since your actual birth date.

Age calculator for documents, photos and collectibles too

The same year/month/day math works for anything with two known dates, not just people. Enter the date something was made, published, purchased or built in the date-of-birth field, and today's date, or any other date, in the second field, to find out how old a document, a photo, a collectible, or a piece of equipment is. A few genuinely common uses: figuring out how long you have owned something for a warranty or insurance claim, working out the age of a historical record for research, or settling a friendly argument about how old a family photo actually is. Nothing about the calculation changes: it is the same date arithmetic either way, only the label on the first field means something different.

What if I don't know my exact date of birth?

If you only know the year, or the month and year, enter your best estimate using the first of the month, or January 1 for a year-only guess, and treat the years/months figure as approximate rather than exact; the days and smaller units will not be reliable in that case. For an exact age where every unit matters, you need the real date of birth. If you are trying to work out someone else's age from a birth year mentioned somewhere, a news article, an obituary, a family record, the same approach applies: pick January 1 of that year as a rough lower bound, keeping in mind the real answer could be up to a year different depending on the actual month.

Using this calculator for forms, applications and age verification

A lot of the time "how old am I" is not idle curiosity, it is a number a form is actually asking for: school enrollment, a job application, a visa or ID renewal, or an online account that requires a minimum age. Filling in a form that asks for "current age as of [some date]" rather than just "date of birth" is exactly what the "age as of" field here is built for: set it to the date printed on the form instead of leaving it at today, and the years/months/days line gives you the precise figure to copy in. This avoids the common mistake of writing down your age as of today when a form actually wants your age as of a specific cutoff date, an off-by-one error that is easy to make counting on your fingers and easy to avoid with an exact calculation.
